A mixture of townhouses and cluster flats for the University of Northampton
The new campus is located along the River Nene on a former brownfield site previously occupied by Avon Cosmetics.
The new Waterside Campus consolidates all academic facilities into one location including a substantial proportion of the University’s residential accommodation.
The new student residences consist of a mixture of shared townhouse and cluster flat accommodation which enclose landscaped courtyards. The residences will be developed in two phases with the initial phase providing 994 student bedrooms with the flexibility to incorporate a further 204 student bedrooms later on.
The design draws upon the industrial heritage of the site in a contemporary way responding to the proposed academic buildings as well as the existing listed Engine Shed to the south of the campus.
The student residences are located immediately adjacent to the new academic accommodation and incorporate a variety of additional facilities including a health centre, multi-faith chaplaincy, convenience store, bank, hotel and launderette. These additional facilities within the development are part of the holistic approach to urban regeneration of the site providing facilities for the student population and wider community.
The student residential reserved matters application was unanimously approved by Northampton Borough Council in November 2015.
