Stride Treglown’s new £9.8m Student’s Union building for the University of the West of England has officially opened its doors, welcoming students for the new term.
The 3,000 sqm development, which sits in the heart of the new and expanding masterplan of the University’s Frenchay campus, comprises of two interlinked buildings that bring all of the Student’s Union services to one accessible location.

The larger of the two buildings houses a number of offices, meeting rooms, a radio hub and a commercial unit, as well as open plan spaces for students to work collaboratively, or socialise, as well as bookable studio space.
The smaller of the two buildings provides a double height social space, with a large bar area, balcony café and leisure area. A vertical timber feature dominates the space, with a distinct visual quality that reflects the unique and original style that can be found within the social scene of Bristol.
The landscape surrounding the UWE Student’s Union, which was designed by Stride Treglown Landscape, will link with the adjoining Faculty of Business and Law development; where a continuation of the paving detail, site furniture and soft landscape is designed to provide a vibrant external public realm, whilst offering additional space for marquees and major annual events.
Director for Stride Treglown, Matt Tarling, commented:
We have enjoyed our continuing relationship with UWE and implementing the first building of the masterplan that we have been involved with since 2009. We are looking forward to seeing the building in use, and are especially looking forward to seeing the Faculty of Business and Law complete the plaza.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve West, said:
It’s a wonderful start to the new University term that we’re able to offer these fantastic new facilities to our students. This Centre is about putting students at the heart of our thinking and will provide a vibrant and attractive environment for them to engage fully with the SU and what it has to offer.
It’s our vision to build a University for the 21st Century, providing the best possible facilities for our students and the completion of this building is an important milestone in the campus redevelopment. With construction underway on the new Faculty of Business and Law Building, planning approval granted for major developments at Bower Ashton Campus and, starting in September, new teaching spaces at the Arnolfini for many of our Creative Arts students, it’s an exciting time to be at UWE Bristol.
The Students’ Union Building is a concept design by London based Architects Hawkins Brown which was developed by Stride Treglown. It was constructed by BAM with M & E Systems designed and installed by F P Hurley. JDL Consultants were the civil and structural engineers.
