Mental Health First Aid

If someone you know is suffering, can you spot the signs?

Nicola Rich is not just our HR Consultant, she’s also a qualified Mental Health First Aid Trainer.

In January 2021, Nicola trained at least one key staff member in each of our 9 offices to enable us to support staff experiencing poor mental health.

The two day course covers depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, psychosis and substance abuse. The mental health crises covered are: suicidal thoughts and behaviours, self-harm, panic attacks, reactions following a traumatic event, severe effects from substance use and aggressive behaviours.

Mental Health First Aiders provide a point of contact if they, or someone they are concerned about, are experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress. They are not therapists or psychiatrists, but they can give initial support and signpost to appropriate help if required, much in the same way as physical first aiders provide initial triage for staff who may be feeling physically unwell.

Named Mental Health First Aiders are visible through our intranet pages, posters displayed in office locations and are also flagged through MHFA ‘buttons’ in email signature lines. Staff have the option to choose who to speak to, which allows anonymity and safe space where appropriate.
